Why can’t this be mandatory reading? I absolutely detest the way the US sees everything as black or white. It’s infuriatingly heartbreaking. If more people knew the stuff you are teaching compassion could spread like wildfire. And where there is compassion there is healing. The judgement only perpetuates the pain and the cycle and the detachment. Thank you for everything you put into your work… I can’t even imagine the hours of research and writing.. not to mention the biggest part.. the experience. You are invaluable 🩶
That feels better than I imagined it would. It really lands on a day when I'm ready to throw everything away.
I will add though that it sounds simple (the compassion part) but I must also recognise the lived experience of those who live with or are closely related to someone who is addicted. It's not easy & sometimes/often/most times, love is not enough (for things to change). I'm just thinking of the mother whose child has robbed her of everything or the child so desperate and hungry for maternal love and attention who's pushed aside due to mother's addiction - it is incredibly difficult.
Can't remember if I said any of that in the essay, but felt it needed to be said though.
So yes, right and wrong doesn't quite cut it. Life is so complex and nuanced. But thats the sweet spot where beauty is birthed, right?
Yooooo my god you're so right. I had put this vastness in a little box... which is crazy because I should really know better. I've always felt like I'm so passionate about seeing both sides of a situation but I'm realizing by both sides I think I mean the "other" side... the one people don't typically see. That's the side I see. I don't think I'm holding space for both sides in actuality. Maybe ..like... ever. Oh dear God woman you are cracking open my brain right along with my heart. I feel like I need to Venmo you for therapy sessions. Ok... didn't mean to make that about me (oh god... and that's the problem! ok... focus...) .... All I meant to say/should have said is.... That's is such a valuable point and perspective. Incredibly important to remember ... thank you for the reminder.
You're ability to see and hold space an actual compass for both sides is what makes your writing so impactful. So necessary. That being said... you come first. Put. You. First. Whatever overflows into your substack will be our gifts... a bonus to the magnitude you've already given to this corner of a very hurting and misunderstood world 🤍
